‘Remote Filming’ Software Developed by Experienced Filmmakers Launches to Global Production Industry

Software allows clients, agency and producers to securely see what their camera sees from anywhere in the world.

Today, a group of highly experienced filmmakers have launched an online service that could revolutionise the way people are running remote shoots during the Covid-19 pandemic and beyond.
Developed by professionals for professionals, Remote Filming was actually in development long before Coronavirus presented the world with travel restrictions and social distancing. With many years behind them in the production industry, founders Yanina Barry and Alex Seery had recognised the need for a more secure and intuitive solution to remote viewing, feedback and review on set.
Whilst there is a myriad of software solutions on the market for remote communication and even for remote filming, the team wanted to create something that was completely fit for purpose. The challenge they often faced themselves on set was that there was no easy way to see a live camera feed remotely. The process often required a lot of expensive proprietary hardware and software and installing potentially risky applications. An experienced operator was needed on set and it made lines of communication complicated.
Executive Producer, Owner of Good Films and Remote Filming Co-Founder, Yanina Barry comments: “The idea originally came to us because we have spent years shooting commercials, feature films, entertainment and broadcast for overseas clients and we found it was becoming increasingly necessary for people to get feedback on the ongoing shoot from colleagues and clients back home. Despite the huge variety of software at our disposal, we realised there was nothing that could allow you to see a camera feed directly and securely with only a standard Wi-Fi connection and no expensive hardware or crew. Now that the production industry is facing its biggest remote-working challenge yet, we wanted to share our solution. The world we re-join will not be the same as the one we left. We anticipate the need for remote working will not subside in an environmentally-conscious future.”
Remote Filming is also keen to promote the ecological benefits of its system. Whilst production budgets and travel restrictions will continue for some time, reducing the need for production companies, agencies and clients to travel will have a lasting and positive benefit on the environment, as well as the budget.
Remote Filming works for multi-camera, location or studio shoots and can be viewed by unlimited authorised numbers of people across the world. In order to view Remote Filming, users are simply provided with encrypted access keys to log in through a private portal using their usual internet browser. Once logged in, the images and audio from set are transmitted live in real-time. Remote Filming has a latency of under 500 milliseconds.
Remote Filming operates on any connection (4G, WiFi or 5Mbps+ upload bandwidth minimum), ensuring content can be viewed both quickly and securely. Both the shoot and the remote viewers can be anywhere in the world; the production company, advertising agency and clients can all log in remotely and from different locations to see what their camera sees. The only equipment needed to transmit is a dedicated on-set laptop, an inexpensive capture card and an internet connection.
Viewers of the live feed can communicate notes securely back through a text chat function incorporated into the page. An executive decision was made that Remote Filming does not share audio feedback. Whilst our user interface has the capability, Remote Filming recognises that different directors and production companies have different on set etiquette and the method of communication should be defined by those using it.

Our priority from the beginning was to ensure the software we created would be completely secure and that only approved viewers could access the feed via an encrypted peer to peer connection. Our second priority was to make it accessible and as easy to use as possible – without having to buy expensive hardware or get to grips with complicated software. We designed the system and interface to be simple, familiar and robust, fit for purpose in a way that wouldn’t interfere with on-set communication.”
